Seller tips

Pricing your first item without guessing

New sellers almost always price too low, on the theory that cheap sells. It does not work the way they expect, and it is worth understanding why before you set your number.

Cheap does not read as good value

A buyer comparing two similar items does not read the cheaper one as the better deal. They read it as the one with less behind it. Price is a signal, and for developer tools it is often the first quality signal a buyer gets.

Support cost does not scale with price

This is the part that surprises people. A buyer who paid $9 asks roughly as many questions as one who paid $49. Price low enough and you are running a support desk for a rounding error, which is how sellers burn out and stop replying, which is what actually kills a listing.

Work out what it replaces

The useful question is not "what are similar items priced at", it is "what does this save the buyer". If your item saves a developer two days, it is competing with two days of their time, not with the cheapest thing in the category.

Then look at the category

Once you have that number, check what comparable items sell for, and be honest about comparable. Something with 400 sales, four years of updates and an author who answers in an hour is not your comparison as a new seller. Price near the middle of the range, not the bottom.

Set the Extended tier deliberately

Extended is for buyers whose end users pay. They are earning from your work, and the tier should reflect that. A common shape is three to five times the Regular price. Setting it too close to Regular leaves money on the table from the buyers who can most afford it.

Raising it later is fine

You can raise your price as the item matures, and existing buyers are unaffected. Their licence and their updates are theirs. Many sellers launch slightly low and move up once the first reviews are in, which is a reasonable way to start.

What you keep

Between 70% and 85%, depending on your level, and the rate is recorded per sale so it is never recalculated behind you. See how seller levels work.
